It was entirely and utterly unlike anything that had come up for the franchise so far. The problem with Final Fantasy 12 was just how … weird… it was. Most people didn’t play it – those who did don’t have much to say about it. It was this, along with its lower sales (the game released just after the Xbox 360 launch, and just before the PS3 and Wii launch, which made it completely eclipse), that made of the game a kind of “lost episode” of Final fantasy. Both sides went on with their lives – the kind of fanatical talk that surrounds a Final fantasy the game is usually almost entirely missing with Final Fantasy 12. There were those who tried it, and didn’t find it to their liking. Final Fantasy 12 was divisive without necessarily invoking the passion of his fan base – there were people who played him, and they liked him very much. Those who did have been divided and divided on its merits.
It came and went, without the big industry realizing it.
Final Fantasy 12 was… not necessarily underrated when it first came out (reviews were rave and it holds a 90 composite Metascore), but oddly understated.
